This Sunday, Lord willing, I’ll be preaching on the 10 Commandments from Exodus 20.  I’m daunted (rightly, I think) by this calling.  Starting last week I began rummaging through my resources on the 10 Commandments in order to help deepen my understanding of them.  I’ve found a number of great resources, but I just wanted to share 4 of them with you.

1. The Baptist Catechism as printed by the Charleston Association of 1813. Questions 46-87 of the catechism most directly relate to the 10 Commandments.  You can download the catechism by clicking here.  I’m working on memorizing this catechism, but I’ve only made it up to question 48, I’d encourage you budding theologians to take up the practice of memorizing the Baptist Catechism.  I’m memorizing it by singing it.  Want to know how you can too?  Go here.  If you don’t believe that you can learn the catechism by singing just ask me to answer the question, “What is God?” and I’ll sing a little ditty for you.

2. How Jesus Transforms the 10 Commandments by Edmund P. Clowney.  The title of the book says it all.  I don’t agree with every word, but I’m right there with Clowney most of the way.  It’s an excellent resource that exalts Christ when considering the Commandments.  I love a good preacher and teacher who can show me Christ in the OT.

3. Keeping the 10 Commandments by J.I. Packer.  This is a very brief resource, but one that is worthy of a look.  At the end of each chapter there suggestions for further study on the topic as well as questions for thought and discussion.

4. Mike Gilbart-Smith’s sermon on Deuteronomy 5.  Mike is a friend and dear brother who pastors Twynholm Baptist Church in the UK.  Remember how I said that I love a good preacher who can show me Christ in the OT?  Mike is one of those preachers.  I’m grateful to God for giving the church this brother.
